Concrete Cut and Polish1/28/2024 Concrete cut and polish is a lengthy, intricate process that requires specialized equipment such as large concrete floor grinders. It’s a time-consuming endeavor but one that delivers sleek, stylish and durable floors without the need for topical coatings and cleaners. Concrete surfaces with a high level of polish have a bright appearance and help maximize ambient lighting in facilities, thus reducing energy costs. Stains and dyes can also be used to add color that resembles earthy elements like tanned leather and stone. What is the difference between a cream polish and a honed polish? When people think of shoe polish, they often envision a wax polish that brings a glossy shine to shoes. While that’s a great way to keep leather shoes looking good, there’s also a cream polish that does much more. It keeps the leather flexible and helps to prevent cracks and scuff marks. It’s important to choose a cream polish that closely matches the color of your leather shoes to prevent the polish from fading. The best way to use a cream polish is by applying it in layers and by using a leather conditioner as well. Concrete polishing is the mechanical process of grinding an existing concrete floor with engineered floor grinders fitted with industrial diamonds until it reaches a desired level of sheen (level 1-4; matte to high gloss). This can be done on unfinished or sealed concrete floors or on finished concrete floors that have been coated with a topical sealer. A high-quality honed concrete floor is achieved by using progressively finer grits of diamond abrasives until the desired level of sheen and clarity of reflection is reached. It is essential that the grit sequence is strictly followed to ensure maximum durability and a quality finish. What is the difference between a honed polish and a polished surface?A honed surface is more matte than polished, and it has less light reflection. It is less slippery when wet, and some people prefer the look for floor surfaces that will see a lot of foot traffic and use. It is easier to keep clean, but it is more susceptible to stains and requires frequent resealing. A concrete polishing contractor can grind and hone the surface to produce either a honed or polished finish. However, a reputable contractor will understand that the results of polishing depend on many variables outside their control, such as the quality of the concrete and its PSI, how well it was hand troweled, and other pre-existing conditions. Grinding the surface with diamond-segmented abrasives produces desired degrees of smoothness and gloss by gradually increasing the grit, much like sanding wood. The higher the grit, the smoother and more reflective the surface. The process is referred to as concrete processing, and it can be done wet or dry. Wet grinding uses water to cool the abrasives and reduce the risk of burning or dulling the concrete. Dry grinding doesn’t use water and is used in more industrial applications. It is faster and more economical than wet grinding, but it can lead to uneven surface results. What is the difference between a honed surface and a polished surface?Typically, concrete contractors grind a slab to a honed or polished finish. This is performed by using engineered floor grinders with industrial diamonds. Then, the diamonds are changed to a progressively finer grit to achieve desired levels of shine and smoothness. This process can be done wet or dry. While polishing is very similar to sanding wood, the type of abrasive used can make or break the final results. Diamond manufacturers offer hard, medium and soft bond abrasives that work best on different types of concrete. The honed surface is more forgiving in terms of hiding dirt, etches and other wear, because the matte finish reflects less light. But, it can be slippery, especially when wet. The honed surface is also more forgiving in terms of hiding scratches and fingerprints because the non-reflective texture masks them. The honed surface also exposes more aggregate and may have a speckled look to it. This finish can be more prone to staining, but it can be easily cleaned by regularly applying topical sealers and periodic cleaning with water or chemical solutions.
